Summary

This manuscript aims to investigate the optimization of a fin-tube heat exchanger used in an indoor unit for a mini VRF heat pump. Refrigerant circuitry optimization is a significant method of enhancing the performance of a fin-tube heat exchanger. The performance simulation program was developed based on tube-by-tube method. The performance simulation was carried out according to the circuitry of fin-tube heat exchangers. The refrigerant circuitry was optimized by maximizing heat transfer rate based on genetic algorithm for given refrigerant and air conditions under cooling and heating seasons. It is found that compared to the reference circuitry, best circuitry of the indoor unit of the heat pump has a 10.5 % increase in heat capacity. For a large heat pump multiple circuits with and split merge tubes can improve the performance. When considering circuitry with multiple circuits, the number of tubes in each circuit is nearly equal and the best circuitries does not include very long or very short circuits.
