Mechanical Vapour Recompression (MVR): a review of applications and a comparison with Thermal Vapour Recompression (TVR).

Number: 0023

Author(s) : LAZZARIN R.

Summary

The exhaust vapour from an industrial process of  concentration, distillation or drying is compressed to a  higher pressure value in MVR technology. The condensation temperature of the  compressed vapour  can then  exceed  the  boiling  temperature  of  the  process  of  some  tens  of  degrees,  so  that  the  heat  of  condensation can be used in the process itself. A small temperature lift is usually sufficient so that this open cycle heat pump can operate at high COP values, often higher than 10.
Nowadays the most widespread utilization of vapour recompression, chemical industry apart, is in the food industry, in the treatment of waste water and in desalination.
Due  to  the  technical  and  maintenance  problems  of  mechanical  compressors,  thermal  vapour  recompression was also conceived. The  choice of the most suitable  technology  depends  on  the  relative costs of steam and electricity and on the plant complexity.
A final economic comparison allows selecting the best solution according to electricity and gas tariff.
