Summary
High-temperature heat pumps are an attractive solution for recovering excess heat from low-temperature sources in industrial processes, despite facing technological and economic constraints. Reaching high efficiency requires the best match of application and heat pump cycle, considering component limitation and efficiencies. This study investigates the techno-economic potential of a multi-stage steam compression heat pump utilising centrifugal compressors. By coupling a heat pump model with an advanced centrifugal compressor model, the number of compression stages and loads were optimized based on the levelized cost of heat. The analysed cycle provides 1 MW of hot water heated from 100 °C to 190 °C with optimal techno-economic performance achieving a coefficient of performance of 4.09 and a levelized cost of heat of 57.2 N/MWh with four compression stages and an 80 °C heat source. The results suggest that simultaneous optimization of the compressor and cycle has limited influence on the design when accurate compressor efficiency approximations are available.
