Summary
Aligning with ambitious targets and commitments towards carbon neutrality, countries with considerable heat-related emissions are desperately seeking an energy transition to cope with the stark reality of the climate crisis and the surge in demand for heating and cooling. Broadening sources and reducing expenditures are the ways out of this dilemma. However, we have to address four underlying challenges in energy transition, including (1) achieve heat electrification, (2) utilize existing thermal power plants, (3) meet the demand for large-scale heat storage, and (4) puzzle out the final “10%” emissions. Here, given the above challenges, we put forth four heat pump-assisted approaches to break the bottleneck of energy transition and facilitate effective incentive strategies for policymakers. Furthermore, we present a selection of successful heat pump applications and use China as just one example in a case study to evaluate the potential for heat decarbonization. We emphasize that the efficiency, flexibility, and considerable potential of heat pumps for reducing carbon emissions positions them to exert a significant influence on the future energy transition. Specifically, under the most optimistic scenario, heat pumps could reduce emissions in countries like China by up to 1470 MtCO2eq for buildings and 635 MtCO2eq for industrial heating by 2060, potentially exceeding 20% of the country's CO2 emissions in 2020. This underlines the transformative role that heat pumps could play in a global context, not just in specific countries.
