Summary
The urban area is increasing due to the population growth in the world and the greater energy consumption by citizens. The heat island effect in the urban area would be carefully taken into consideration. We focus on the cooling method in a natural way, i.e., transpiration phenomenon learning from plants. Creating a system for cooling water by using the mechanism of transpiration of water by using the porous ceramics, would be the rational way. The experimental study has conducted on a very small prototype water-cooling apparatus, which consists of wet porous ceramics with the forced-convection airflow provided by a fan. The latent heat is expected to cool both the water and porous ceramics. As a result, the cooling performance of our cooling test apparatus achieved to 0.851 kW·m-2 and 1.30 kW·m-2 as the maximum cooling capacity per unit area in the midsummer and the intermediate seasons of Tokyo, Japan, respectively. The cooling capacity would be large enough for cooling the heat island problem in the urban area.
