Summary
We can selectively pump specific gases by applying the electrochemical mass transfer principles, enabling novel electrochemical dehumidification and gas compression. To improve the dehumidification performance of the proton polymer electrolytic membrane (PEM), we proposed using the anion exchange membrane (AEM) and developed the hydroxide conducting membrane electrode assembly material in-house. The measured water transfer performance of the experimental membrane electrode assembly at DC 3 V input and 800 ml/min oxygen flow rate was 1.85 g/day/cm2 with 80% Faradic efficiency and 0.063 g/J·m2 dehumidification efficiency. Electrochemical compression emerges as a promising technique for hydrogen and ammonia storage. Using hydrogen as a carrier gas, we could compress ammonia with a maximum efficiency of 40% compared to ideal isentropic compression. New emerging electrochemical technologies, electrochemical dehumidification and compression, are up-and-coming for separate sensible and latent cooling of the built environment and the future of clean energy storage and transport.
