Determination of suitable exposure limits for quantitative risk assessments of ammonia refrigeration installations.
Number: 0366
Author(s) : ANDERSON K., PACHAI A., PEARSON A.
Summary
The demand for quantitative risk assessment in all aspects of industrial engineering is increasing. Recent developments in international standards which adopt a more risk-based approach, for example ISO 9001:2015 “Quality Management Systems” have reinforced this shift but the values used for general workplace assessments of exposure to ammonia are not suitable for this purpose. This paper reviews the development of data on ammonia toxicology from the late 19th century to the present day. It explains the ways in which ammonia can have adverse effects on humans through skin contact, eye irritation and respiration.
Values suitable for use in quantitative risk assessments are proposed with the reasons for their adoption. In conclusion a new methodology for assessing risk based on leak rate and duration and distance from the leak point to the affected subject giving a severity assessment for the likely effect on the subject. This was originally developed for a workshop conducted at the 7th International Conference on the Cold Chain and Sustainability, held in April 2022 on behalf of the International Institute of Refrigeration’s Safety Working Group.
