Summary

Undertaken in anticipation of the 28th Conference of the Parties (COP) on Climate Change and of forthcoming UN summits on the protection of our planet, this compendium provides a technological overview of the issues which today affect every aspect of our lives and of the economy.
It aims to make the debate comprehensible to the greatest number of people by providing the protagonists in the various environmental negotiations with precise terms – in French, Arabic and English – and with clearly defined concepts : over 250 terms with which to address the climate change issues that are now so increasingly apparent, to understand their implications and to explore the answers provided or under consideration, both at the political and individual level.
This glossary is designed to facilitate stocktaking of the current environmental situation, particularly via terms relating to carbon and greenhouse gas emissions, or to biodiversity. It not only covers various aspects the Emirati COP28 chair wishes to highlight, such as energy transition (fossil energies and bioenergies, sustainable mobility, town-planning, etc.),
it also provides the necessary climate diplomacy terms to address issues such as North-South solidarity.

The terms selected for this compendium and their English equivalents, definitions and notes are drawn from the Commission’s publications in the Journal officiel. The full records can be consulted on franceterme.culture.gouv.fr. The Arabic equivalents have been provided by the Applied Languages Stream of the Faculty of Arts of the University of Alexandria under the supervision of the International Organisation of La Francophonie (OIF).
