The use of natural refrigerants in North America – current trends and future opportunities.

Summary
Natural refrigerants are among the most promising candidates in the search for environmentally benign working fluids. While their direct global warming impact is very low, each of the main contenders, namely carbon dioxide (CO2, R744), ammonia (NH3, R717), and hydrocarbons (propane, R290; isobutane, R600a) each carry their own set of engineering challenges. On the other hand, a miracle low-GWP synthetic fluid which would readily address all technical and environmental requirements is not available either. This means that going forward, manufacturers and users of HVAC&R equipment will need to realize that any future working fluid choice will require thorough engineering to work around the special characteristics of the available fluid options. The following paper highlights some of the recent achievements in successfully converting various HVAC&R applications to natural refrigerants. The study illustrates that the obtained performance in terms of energy efficiency and cooling capacity is on par with their respective HFC/HFO baseline systems with a reasonable amount of technical effort.
