Summary
Handbook on Stirling machines which are a form of heat engine depending for their operation on the expansion and compression at different temperatures of a gaseous working fluid. They incorporate a novel component, a form of heat exchanger acting as a thermodynamic sponge, which makes Stirling engines uniquely efficient forms of heat engines. Although Stirling engines have been used for over 150 years in various applications, the future holds unprecedented opportunities for both power systems and refrigerators. Contents: history; fundamentals of Stirling technology (definition and terminology; thermodynamic laws and cycles; Stirling cycle; practical regenerative cycle; theoretical aspects and computer simulation of Stirling machines; mechanical arrangements; control systems; heat exchangers; performance characteristics; working fluids); applications of Stirling machines (advantages and disadvantages; Stirling versus internal combustion and Rankine engines; applications; Stirling power systems); literature and sources of supply. World educational materials and companies or agencies with an active interest in miniature Stirling cryocoolers are given in the appendices.
