Summary
Proper air conditioning and ventilation system design for airborne bacteria control to reduce Surgical Site Infection (SSI) risk in hospital operating room (OR) is very important. This study used computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation to discuss the effect of ventilation air conditioning system of different air flow patterns of horizontal laminar flow (HLF) and vertical laminar flow (VLF) in bone marrow transplantation ward (BMTW) on the ventilation efficiency and contaminant removal efficiency. The contaminant concentration on the regions nearby the operating table were compared and analyzed. The study found that even if the vents arrangement of VLF is distributed uniformly in relation to the space, the ventilating airflow removes the contaminant concentration in the operating area of operating table slows, whereas the ventilation system of HLF can provide better air flow pattern and contaminant removal for the operating table region. In addition, in the case of using HLF design to reduce the supply air (SA) for energy saving, the study found that regardless of the supply air vent size is reduced or the supply air velocity is reduced from 0.33m/s to 0.22m/s directly, a good removal effect can be maintained. However, keeping the size of the SA vents and reducing the air velocity would have better removal effect on the contaminants in the whole space than maintaining the SA velocity and reducing the SA vent size. It is mainly because the vent coverage is an important key in contaminant removal.
