Summary
An experimental study of a Photovoltaic and Thermal (PV-T) collector working as an evaporator of a solar assisted heat pump is here presented. The heat pump prototype has two evaporators in parallel. The first one is a finned coil, while the second one is made of three PV-T collectors. The working refrigerant is CO2. Each PV-T collector consists of a photovoltaic panel, which is thermally coupled to a sheet-and-tube heat exchanger. The CO2 while evaporating in the tubes allows to cool down the photovoltaic cells. The main objective of this system is to increase the seasonal coefficient of performance of the heat pump as compared to an air source heat pump and thus reduce the overall electrical consumption. The first measurements on the heat pump showed that it is possible to reach higher evaporation temperature by using the PV-T evaporator as compared to the case of a conventional air-to-refrigerant evaporator. Eventually, the measurements allowed to trace the collector efficiency curve, which can be a useful tool for modelling purposes.
