Summary
Safety is of growing concern to all parties in the refrigeration industry. Following a number of accidents in both Europe and other parts of the world, safety has become an important priority for politicians as well as facility owners because a bad accident can be detrimental to a company’s brand. In this paper we will have a look at the different refrigerants used in the industry, and we will look at the accidents seen and their root causes. It represents a problem when more than 40% of all accidents happen in connection with service and maintenance on the refrigeration system. In some countries, data show that up to 60% of all incidents happen during service and maintenance. Also, we will have a look at leaks and where to look for them. When discussing accidents and their root causes, we will also look at how to avoid most of them. We know that some accidents will happen, but a number of the accidents we have seen could have been prevented by proper design and training.
