Reversible CO2 heat pump with ejectors for efficient heating and air-conditioning.
Number: 0188
Author(s) : SCHÖNENBERGER J., DECASPER M.
Summary
Based on a concept evaluation in summer 2018, aiming to replace the existing oil heating and air conditioning system in a shopping mall in Switzerland, the decision was made to install two reversible air-to-water CO2 heat pumps with a nominal heating capacity of 1.1 MW and an air conditioning capacity of 1.3 MW. Despite the higher investment and life cycle costs, the concept was chosen because of its outstanding sustainability. Within the following year the reversible heat pumps were developed, manufactured, installed on site, and finally commissioned in autumn 2019.
From then on, the operation was accompanied for about two years and operational optimizations and control-related adjustments were carried out. Based on the measurement data from autumn 2020 to autumn 2021, a detailed evaluation of the operation was carried out, with a special focus on energy efficiency. In addition to the energy aspects, this jobsite showed that it is possible to supply a large building with the required heating and cooling demands at given temperature levels by reversible air-to-water CO2 heat pumps with ejectors. In addition of ensuring the basic requirements of heating and air-conditioning, valuable experience was gained in terms of control and regulation strategy, partial load behaviour of the heat pumps and the interaction between ejectors and throttle valves.
The operational principle of the air-to-water CO2 heat pump with ejectors, the results from the efficiency analysis as well as the lessons learned will be shared and discussed.
