Summary
The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations estimates that one third of all food produced for human consumption is either lost or wasted, which increases emissions from landfills. By improving the efficiency and reliability of refrigeration technology, the cold chain can be significantly strengthened, minimizing
wastage of perishable products and boosting food security globally. In fact, strengthening the cold chain can positively impact every single one of the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This is why investing in future-proof, climate-friendly, HFC-free refrigeration technologies should be a key priority for governments, industries, and all end users within the cold chain. This paper shows how natural refrigerants have been used in commercial and industrial installations around the world
to provide cold chain security. These systems can improve energy efficiency, minimize the impact of harmful refrigerants on the environment, provide system reliability, and avoid food wastage.
