Multi-temperature transport: multi-compartment vehicles vs. mini-containers.
Author(s) : MEFFERT H. F. T.
Summary
Multi-temperature distribution has attracted the interest of the food trade because of the possibility of savings on logistic costs by combination of cargoes with different temperature requirements. The systems offered, however, do not meet stringent demands of temperature management. Test methods are still studied. Technical development is not yet completed. Alternative solutions by splitting the cargo in self-contained units, offer better protection, thermal and general, prolonged into trans-shipment processes and waiting periods. They comply with modern logistic concepts which require frequent deliveries of small consignments. Modern methods of insulation and refrigeration facilitate modular coordination between subunits, mini-containers. Flexible interpretation of traffic and perishables Transportation Regulations would favour the development of suitable equipment.
