LNG cold in the quest of reducing post harvest losses of agricultural produce in India.
Number: 1163
Author(s) : SARKAR S. C., SARKAR S.
Summary
The post-harvest losses of agriculture produce in India is as high as 40% as compared to about 2 % in the UK due to lack of proper logistic cold chain in India. India is in the process of enhancing its Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) import to a great extent in the next couple of years by setting up several import terminals in Gujarat and other places in India. At the receiving port, the LNG undergoes a regasification process before supply to consumers leading to huge cold energy wastage to the environment. These cold losses during regasification could be a potential and viable source of refrigeration for cold storage with a zero Carbon Dioxide emission.
The paper describes the prospects of cold storage and cold chain for perishable agricultural produce using liquid nitrogen /liquid air generated from the waste cold during regasification of LNG under Indian context.
