Liquid nitrogen and preservation of genetic material of biological origin. Historical overview.
Number: 0020
Author(s) : ARAPETYAN E.
Summary
Liquid nitrogen (-1960°C) was received by Swiss physicist Raoul-Pierre Pictet in 18th century. Practical use of liquid nitrogen began in 20th century. This is a well-developed and worldwide recognized technique for long-term preservation of biological material and is applied in different areas. Cryopreserved samples showed genetically identical qualities to non-treated ones. The main advantage of seed storage in liquid nitrogen in comparison with another plant parts is that seeds possess all genetic characteristics (genotype) accumulated during evolutionary development. The research of long-term storage of biodiversity for the future is an integral part of environmental protection. CryoBanks are a common way of conserving genetic resources of fauna and flora - the national wealth of the state.
