Hydrocarbon refrigerants in cascade refrigeration systems.
Alternativa idrocarburi nei sistemi in cascata.
Author(s) : NOVAK L., ZGLICZYNSKI M.
Summary
Cascade systems are widely used in ultra-low refrigeration systems mainly for medical, chemical and laboratory purposes. Those systems are able to provide very low storage temperature (from -70 to -95 deg C) due to their special construction. Cascade systems are usually powered by two reciprocating compressors. Their energy consumption and impact to environment is not negligible. Proper compressor selection, quality of thermal insulation and refrigerant circuit construction could decrease impact, but the critical decision for such a system is selection of a proper refrigerant that would be environmentally sound, provide optimal operational conditions and as a consequence make the product more attractive for customers. Selection presented in the paper includes refrigerants that can be used in both stages of cascade system. The paper presents simulation and a comparison with real measurements related to use hydrocarbons instead of traditional HFC refrigerants. Hydrocarbon refrigerants are environment friendly and suitable as alternative refrigerants for this type of applications. The paper also contains TEWI calculation and basic safety consideration for use of hydrocarbons.
