Heat transfer and viscous losses in micro-channel passive regenerators. 1. Apparatus and experimental results.
Author(s) : TURA A., SHOPFER S., ROWE A., et al.
Summary
The University of Victoria research group developed a passive regenerator test apparatus with the objective of obtaining the heat transfer coefficient and hydraulic losses of regenerator geometries suitable for active magnetic regenerator refrigerators. After initial tests with 1 mm diameter spheres new experiments have been conducted with a newly developed micro-channel type of regenerator manufactured with the collaboration of the Universita di Salerno through a laser sintering process. Each 23.5 mm diameter regenerator includes approximately 730 channels with a squared cross sectional area of 0.5 mm2. The test apparatus was modified to accommodate a Fiber Bragg Grating to read fluid temperature at five points equally spaced inside one of the micro-channel. Temperatures at the regenerator cold and hot inlet and of the solid regenerator were instead monitored by thermocouples. Measurements for a range of frequencies, fluid mass flow rate per cycle, and temperature spans were performed. See also this issue of the Bulletin, reference 2011-0193.
