Feasibility study of various conventional and unconventional natural refrigerants for high temperature heat pump applications.
Number: 1107

Summary
Heat pumps offer an energy-efficient alternative to traditional electric heaters. However, current heat pumps are unable to perform reliably at very high temperatures (above 100C). One of the major limitations is with the thermophysical properties of traditional refrigerants. Recently there has been an increase in awareness of sustainable practices and processors, hence the use of natural refrigerants are highly desired due to their reduced environmental impacts compared to synthetic refrigerants. Various attempts have been reported at testing the suitability of various existing refrigerants (synthetic and natural) and blends, however, no single fluid or group of fluids have been conclusively found. In this study, a broad survey is carried out to look at various natural fluids, including those that have not been considered before in the literature, for High Temperature Heat Pumps(HTHPs) with a condensing and evaporating temperature of 120C and 5C respectively. Ammonia, Methylamine, Ethanol and Water are the fluids that showed the best performance with the HTHP cycle, with Ethanol showing the highest Coefficient of Performance (COP) of 3.19.
