Summary
European Regulation (EU) No. 517/2014 (2014) will phase out refrigerants with a global warming potential (GWP) higher than 750 from the air conditioning industry by 2025. This requires the pursuit of the new refrigerants based on the low GWP compositions such as hydrocarbons, which consequently increase the flammability of the obtained mixture. This paper presents an experimental investigation of the flammability parameters of the climate-friendly refrigerant blends that are part of the European project COOLSPACES4LIFE. The aim of the investigation is to determine the lower flammability level (LFL), one of the most important parameters to classify the safety of refrigerants. The study will focus on the low-GWP refrigerant blends composed of hydrocarbons (HC), hydrofluoroolefins (HFO) and hydrofluorocarbons (HFC), which have thermodynamic performance comparable to the currently used HFCs. The research was conducted using an experimental set-up designed according to the test method described in ASTM E681:2015, improved for accuracy and reproducibility according to ASHRAE RP-1717.
