Summary
In this work, a solar assisted heat pump working with CO2 as the refrigerant is presented. The heat pump produces hot water using solar radiation as the low-temperature heat source. Photovoltaic and thermal (PV-T) solar collectors are employed as the evaporator of the heat pump. This means that part of the incident solar radiation is converted into electrical power by the PV modules and part is converted into heat to evaporate the CO2. Furthermore, the refrigerant circuit has been designed to allow the evaporator to operate in flooded mode with natural or forced circulation. This configuration, compared to dry expansion, can be very efficient since it is possible to avoid maldistribution issues. The functioning of the heat pump with the PV-T evaporators operating in flooded configuration has been experimentally investigated. A distributed parameters numerical model of the collectors has been developed and validated. The model has been exploited to understand the main advantages and challenges of the presented system.
