Résumé

The industrial heating sector is dominated by the combustion of fossil fuels. Fossil fuels however have to be phased out in favour of renewables in order to achieve global climate goals. For industrial heating processes at temperature levels below 250 °C, several alternatives to fossil fuel combustion are identified, namely: electrical boilers, vapour compression heat pumps and heat transformers. These heating technologies have been studied in depth in the literature, yet a thorough comparison in terms of thermodynamic and financial performance is missing. This work compares these technologies for different industrial boundary conditions from a techno-economic aspect. The results show that both natural gas boilers, vapour compression heat pumps and heat transformers are competitive technologies, depending on the boundary conditions. The heat transformer is the most favourable technology when sufficient residual heat is available and the gross temperature lift exceeds 30-80 K, depending on the electricity price. At lower gross temperature lifts the vapour compression heat pump shows the lowest levelized cost of heating (LCOH). When no abundant amount of waste heat is available the vapour compression heat pump becomes the most interesting technology over the complete range of gross temperatures lifts. When the natural gas price is high, the natural gas boiler is the cheapest technology only when small amounts of residual heat are available. For decreasing natural gas prices, a large part where either the vapour compression heat pump or heat transformer is optimal is replaced by the natural gas boiler. The electric boiler was never optimal.
