Summary
The restrictions to the use of refrigerants with high GWP have increased the interest in natural refrigerants. NEXTHPG project, funded by EU, has the objective of developing 5 high capacity heat pump prototypes working with natural refrigerant (R290 and R744). These prototypes will have higher efficiencies and lower Carbon footprint than alternative HFCs systems already available in the market. In the frame of this project, this work is focus on the analysis of the behavior of a finned tube heat exchanger designed for an air to water inverter heat pump of 50 kW for the production of hot water for heating applications working with R290. The study has compared the performance of the heat pump using a heat exchanger of 5 mm of diameter and 7 mm of diameter with the same secondary fluid area. The comparison has evaluated the differences in terms of COP and refrigerant charge. The results of this analysis have shown that with a proper design, 5 mm evaporator can reduce the refrigerant charge on the evaporator up to 30% without a significant reduction in COP.
