Résumé
There is no completely agreed-upon definition for what a sustainable city should be or agreed-upon paradigm for what components should be included. Generally, a sustainable city should meet the needs of the present without sacrificing the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Such a sustainable city should be able to power itself with renewable sources of energy, to create the smallest possible ecological footprint, to efficiently use energy in households, offices and transportation, and thus make the overall contribution to climate change a minimal one. If such practices are adhered to, cogeneration of heat and electricity (CHP) becomes an important issue. Due to the increasingly expensive and volatile cost of energy, this strategy has become very important because it allows a way for city residents to be less susceptible to varying highs and lows in various energy prices. This paper addresses different conventional and renewable energy sources, various CHP technologies and their environmental impacts, as well as an innovative approach to make both heat and electricity from CHP equally attractive to residents of sustainable cities if compared to other alternatives.
