Résumé

Propane (R290) is considered a promising environmentally friendly substitute to replace high GWP refrigerants that are going to be phased out soon. It presents favorable thermophysical properties, but its high flammability calls for deep investigations in order to evaluate its usage in domestic refrigeration and air conditioning systems. In this work, the effect of a propane leakage from an indoor air conditioning unit into a closed room is investigated. The experimental setup consisted of a parallelepiped box. Aiming at analyzing a more realistic scenario, an obstacle was added in the room to simulate items. The propane flowed into the room from the bottom at different mass flow rates. A propane detector was set in the middle of the ceiling. Additionally, a numerical model implemented in Ansys Fluent 18.2 was developed to estimate the propane diffusion field and validated on the experimental results for further analyses of different scenarios.
