Résumé
There is a relatively high density of sensible heat load in datacenters and the air conditioning system has to be operating all year round to extract heat. This paper proposes a heat extraction process with a large chilled-water temperature difference in order for datacenters to improve their energy efficiency. A quasi-counter flow cooling coil between air and water is designed to increase chilled water temperature difference. Operating characteristics are investigated. A cooling tower is used to meet part of the requirements in the transition mode and the vapor compression refrigeration system is designed to improve performance owing to the large temperature difference of chilled water. This new process is more convenient to utilize than the natural cooling source and the changing-over between natural and mechanical cooling sources is easier to achieve. Taking Beijing as an example, the energy performance of this proposed heat extraction process is investigated. The average EER of the cooling plant is 23.1, 10.9 and 7.2 respectively for the winter, the transition season and the summer modes. Taking the fan power of indoor cooling coils into account, the annual average EER of the entire system is approximately 7.1, in terms of performing competitive energy efficiency.
