A retail road map for supermarkets.

Summary
A Refrigeration Road Map was developed that introduced the main energy saving opportunities for refrigeration use in the retail sector and demonstrates how simple actions save energy, cut costs and increase profit margins. The work within the road map was divided into 3 sections: retrofit technologies (those that could be fitted now), refit technologies (those that could be fitted during a cabinet refit) and new store technologies (those that could be implemented in a new store build). The work examined 72 different technologies and their potential to save direct and indirect emissions in supermarkets. The calculations were compared to a baseline typical supermarket operating on R404A. Results from the work have shown that most technologies either save CO2e emissions from reduction in energy or from reduction in refrigerant leakage. Only a few technologies demonstrated savings in both direct and indirect emissions. Assuming a realistic uptake of technologies, savings of up to 794 tCO2e (44% of current baseline store) for retrofitting components, 976 tCO2e (54% of baseline) for refitting supermarkets and 1201 tCO2e (66% of baseline) for new stores was achievable.
